I guess it's really easy to get a gun in Virginia. All you do is fill out a form, hand over your money, and walk out with a gun.

Maybe it's time for Virginia lawmakers to rethink this.

I honestly do not think it would make any difference. I do not know of any proposed law, if it had been in place before the shooting, that would have made any difference. He did not have a criminal record, he waited more than five days after buying the guns, I can't imagine what gun registration would have done, and they were not assault rifles. So he still would have been able to buy the guns legally. Also, it is really easy to get guns illegally, so I do not know what effect a new law would have in any case. The more illegal it is to get guns, the more profitable it would be to sell them on the black market, and how do you punish someone who is planning on killing themselves after a murder anyway? I doubt the threat of a fine or prison sentence for owning a gun would have much of an effect on someone who is suicidal.
I do not believe that access to guns is what causes gun crime. Other countries have lots of guns as well, and no where near the level of gun crime we have. Something about America or American's does it. I just have no clue what it is. It is very sad.

NO, if anything if it was easier for trained and informed people like mysef to carry a weapon, places like that school would be safer. I am not saying anyone who can purchase one should be able to carry it, but maybe have a course or some sort of special certification to get so that someone who is capable could carry one in such a place... Consider it something like a sky marshal for the general population

HAHAHAHA felix... machine guns... the general population cannot and do not own machine guns... perhaps you are thinking of what the media refers to as "assault weapons" and this label is what fools like you make this distinction to be. Only the military has access to machine guns legally, unless you have yourself a federal firearms license, and these are next to impossible to get, and you pay BIG time to register them if you get one.

In short; NO.
There are many laws that prevent a person from purchasing a firearm, who may not be eligible such as felons, a person under psychiatric care, those under age or those who may have been convicted of violent crimes (non-felony).
However, to ask that this tragedy may have been avoided by those who are charged with enforcing those laws; I would ask this question.
Firearms are a part of American history, albeit there are some who should never own them.
Yesterday was a very sad and tragic day!
Hope that answers your question, you had asked what people think.

NO. I think they should be easier to get. For some reason the crooks and weirdos all get the guns. Do you know how much guns cost? I would like to have a gun but can't afford one.
Oh that's right they get them illegally anyway.
I think the government should figure out a way to keep the bad guys from getting the guns but I have no idea on how they would do that. I suppose if they knew how they would have done it by now.

How many many career criminals register their guns ? Disarming the general law abiding public is not a logical answer . Liberals are quick to label their opponents as "nuts' or when they are caught for questionable behavior..they blame a "vast right wing conspiracy" - as they dismiss themselves from any responsibility . .
Since I really doubt guns were magically telling the school shooter what to do..and there is ample evidence to show that most student/school massacres are committed because of the use of certain drugs ( like Prozak) ..the bigger question is : why aren't law makers going after drug companies who flood young men & boys with these mind altering drugs ?

NRA actually wants to make the guns laws more lax then it already is-not everyone who buys a gun plans to use it for good intention. Only in America is gun violence so high, other countries do not have to worry about school shootings and things like that. In the past decade more people have been killed with guns then ever before-it's time for a change.

I believe it should be a privilege to own a gun, just as it's a privilege to drive. Gun owners should be licensed, tested for the knowledge of firearms, and evaluated from time to time to ensure they are capable of handling the responsibility of gun ownership (just a motorists are evaluated and re-tested for their ability to drive a car).
However, that said, I also don't believe that gun control will ever stop mass killings such as the Virginia Tech incident. There are all kinds of freaks out there; that's the price we pay for living in a free society. -RKO- 04/18/07

No. And I don't even own any!

What law, would you suggest, would even address this particular situation? I can't think of one. Had the killer been involuntary committed in 2005, he would not have been able to buy a gun.

for every 1 person killed by a gun in the U.S. 188 people are killed in a motor vehicle accident. why dont you talk about the car nuts they are far far far more people killed by them. should we pass laws to stop the nasty car owners. I bet you would say no to that since you own one
