I totally agree! I live in Canada where the trial of Mr. Robert Pickton has a similar degree of hype due to the amount of victims murdered. Many citizens, including myself wrote to all the news outlets to express our concerns regarding the killers notoriety vs. the victims loss of life & the pain inflicted on their family & friends! They heeded our cries & focused on the the innocent who died. One of my reasonings is that our society glorifies the villian/killer in the news & other, to the point where the public knows their entire name, date of birth, place of birth, etc., etc., but can't name any of the victims or the goals they had in life. We then remember the horrible event to which the killer remains famous, but forget the faces & people behind those faces who's lives were taken too soon & why we are outraged by the act, where such an event took them in such a short span of time.
PS- the crime TV shows are not helping as they focus on the criminal & show dead decaying bodies that become mere objects in scientific study to solve the crime just in the name of entertainment. We the audience have no emotional attachment to sympathize or empathize their loss of life. There's something very wrong with our Western Society if we view murder as entertaining, & that includes the voyeurism we enjoy on "News" shows like CNN, DATELINE, etc., after a tragic massacre as this one at Virginia Tech. Anything to fill the TV air until the next sad story errupts to sideline this one.

I didn't really react to the tragedy which really bothered me, until today on Oprah a young man who survived Columbine expressed this and it clicked. All the coverage of the killer was like glorifying evil. There are sadly people out there who will take this as a record to be broken and I guess will take post-mortem attention for an unspeakable act to none at all.
I think that people want to know about the killer to understand the WHY and know how to protect themselves from ever being a victim. The truth is - you can't. I'm sorry. So don't put off hugging someone and telling your mom you love her!

The Columbine killers and the VA Tech killer had 1 thing in common. They were both picked on in high school. I think that had something to do with it. How do I know? THE KILLERS SAID SO!

This is one of the better questions I've seen about the topic. I agree we should focus on the victims and not the killer.
I think the reason they focus on the killer because people are fascinated by the reasons why people would do should a heinous act.

There has been plenty of media coverage devoted to the victims. People are also going to be curious about the person who did such a terrible thing - the public wants answers. How, why? People need to know how this happened - how this man was able to do such a thing. Nobody is glorifying what he did, but questions need to be answered about him.

That is an excellent point. We want to hear about the people who lost their lives, not the murderer. I read a book, "She Said Yes", which was about a girl who was killed in the Columbine incident. Her mother wrote it, and it was pretty much a biography of her life. I think it was great to read, very sad though. They should be focusing on the victims, I couldn't agree more.

You have to have the families' permission before you start throwing around pictures and stories of the victims. Most families won't be willing to do it. No one wants to see their dead kid every time they turn on the television!

i agree. it would be good, plus, people might recognize someone that might have done something against him. maybe bush doesn't want that much publicity. It might be used against him. he just wants it to be over and all the talk about victims to would just keep it in peoples mind longer.

i could not agree more...the media is trying to breed hate for the killer rather than remorse for those that lost their lives.
