My girlfriend and I recently started private lessons and found them to be very expensive. We are hoping to learn several types of dance, including waltz, salsa, tango, rumba, swing, etc. We are trying to decide if the higher cost of private lessons is worth it, or could we get the same results from the less expensive group lessons?

Start out with group lessons. This is relatively cheap and effective. If you are having trouble or want more detail - go for private lessons.

For complete beginners, private lessons are not worth it. All the same, the teacher will have to stand there, demonstrate you basic steps, call out the counts, make you try the step and repeat it many times. You might as well do it in a group. Once you get some information down, take a couple of private lessons to have your questions answered and to receive feedback and suggestions on improvement. See where that takes you. By then, you will have enough experience to decide what is the best way to proceed further.

Try checking into your local college, taking a ballroom class is usually cheaper in the long run. Also, if you go out dancing, there are may (or may not) be a dance lesson available an hour before a band decides to play.

You two should ask yourselves which of the dances you want to learn first and go that route because each sort of dance has some basic moves and some moves that are more advanced and require a lot of time to get down.

Also, community centers usually have some kind of dance lessons available at a pretty cheap rate.

You can try various locations for your classes. Try out your local YMCA or health club if you have one near by. If you are very interested in dancing and getting into competitions then go for the private lessons. They will pay off in the end. Believe it's total worth it.

I always think it's better to have group lessons in the beginning stages of anything. especially dance and physical activities.
not only is it cheaper, but you get to watch other people and learn from them as well--what they do and what not to do.
once you get very advanced (competition level), then you should want privates, so you can fine tune the little nuances that judges scrutinize.

It's better to have group lessons 'cause you pay less. Go for it, and if it doesn't work out, then just go back to the private lessons. I mean,it doesn't hurt to try.

Whichever type of dancing intrests you! And whatever you think you would have most fun at, and whatever suits your style. You can always add other dance types as well. I like ballet, modern and jazz, personally.

Group works best. You are more at ease and you can learn from others.
