It depends on what you want to classify, there are taxonomic keys for every major class and their sub-branches ( family, order, sub-order, etc) and depending on whether they are plants, animal, fungus, etc, it is different. So you need to say what type of organism you want to classify. For example, the order carnivores of the class mammalia has a different taxonomic key that the taxonomic key of class or family of angiosperms (flowering plants).

If you are talking about the big picture, for example, how do you place an animal within the class mammalia, there are several characteristics:
-the production of milk in females for the nourishment of young, from mammary glands present on most species and specialized skin glands in monotremes that seep or ooze milk
-the presence of hair or fur;
-specialized teeth;
-three small bones within the ear;
-the presence of a neocortex region in the brain; and
-endothermic or "warm-blooded" bodies,
-in most cases, the existence of a placenta in the ontogeny.

So these are characteristics an individual needs to have to be classified as a mammal, from there it branches out to the different families, orders, etc, It's not that simple!.
