We live out in the country, and some years have a huge mouse problem. Our cats can't keep up!

The traps I had the most success with were the cube traps. They don't kill the mouse, but they catch them quickly. I use a bit of peanut butter on a cracker and they go in the one way door and are trapped. I have even caught two mice at a time in them! To release I do a flip and tip several miles away from my house. I got my traps for a reasonable price at Walmart.

The best and easiest "kill" traps are the Victor Quick set traps. They are plastic and you just pinch the back of them until they are open. I put peanut butter on the tongue, but just a tiny bit. I can hear them snap and have removed the dead mouse to get another one within ten minutes.

Worst traps are the glue ones. Caught a mouse, it was still alive. I wrapped it in a garbage bag and put in a grocery bag outside on my porch and it was gone by morning. Cruel and gross.

I also dislike the old metal and wood snap traps. I can never get them set without snapping my fingers at least once. the kids don't need to know anymore cuss words. ;)

Good luck!

When it comes to mousetraps, there's no need to build a better mousetrap. The traditional snappy kind still works the best.

Where it might be good to stray from tradition is the bait you use: cheese is too easy for the enterprising mouse to steal. Peanut butter is the modern alternative, because it sticks to the trap.

If you're squeamish about traps, there's always the other long-standing tradition: a cat. Even the most spoiled indoor-bred useless purrbeast can be an effective mouse deterrent. (Providing that it's not declawed, but that's a bad idea all on its own.) Unless the cat is at least partially outdoorsy, it may not actually *catch* a mouse; it'll merely scare it away. But if you're squeamish about mouse carcasses, that's probably a good thing. :)

What works the best is poison, but that isn't safe to have around kids or pets and it is a very unpleasant death for the mice. You might also get a dead mouse in the walls that could cause a stink... but I don't think that is very likely.

I use the Victor Electronic trap. It is a little black box with two contacts inside. When the mouse goes for the peanut butter he gets a shock that kills him. A little green light on the outside of the box then lights up telling you he is there. Open the box, dump the mouse and your ready to go again.

I've tried glue traps and the old-fashioned snap traps. The snap traps work the best, especially the ones you don't need to bait (they come with a piece of "cheese" that really does attract the mice). You need to place them with care, though: put them perpendicular to the baseboard, with the bait side facing the wall. Mice run along the base of a wall, so that's where you need to put the trap.

I believe they are called Victor or Victory if I recall correct.

It's been a while and I have thrown the old ones out. But the ones you can get in grocery stores do the job. I use peanut butter for bait smear a little on top and on the bottom and it will get them. good luck.

i found that the sticky tacks i call them. they usually lay flat are are coated with a gluey substance, even though they come like they are with no bait required,i puts a little bit of flour in the middle of mine. once the mouse is eventually caught(in this case stuck to it) you can fold it up mouse and all then dispose of it.
