Are you purchasing new or used? If you purchase used it is going to vary by individual vehicle and the way that it was treated by previous owners, amount of miles on the vehicle, ect.
If purchasing new I would consider a mitsibishi lancer. It comes with a 100,000 mile warranty so that would prevent any major repair costs while she is in school. It has 4 doors for easy access for friends or siblings to get into the car. They are reliable and inexpensive. If you are not fond of the lancer then maybe a Honda Civic. They do not have the warranty that the lancer does, but they are "cute" cars and have good reviews and are inexpensive.

Hondas Toyotas Nissans and Scions--Civic, Yaris, Corolla, Sentra, Versa, tC, etc.
The main thing I would suggest is keeping the car in your name and making sure your daughter understands school=car. No school=no car. She pays insurance. For such a large reward, furthering her education should be required. The car is only if she promises to get a degree or certification of some type and the car stays in your name until completion - failure to start or complete education and the car is yours.

I understand that the Mitsubishi Eclipse is very popular among young females. It has nice lines, making it very distinguishable, and a very good sound system. It also gets good gas mileage for a sports coupe; although, the base model is probably not going to give you a lot of acceleration (which you don't need anyway).
