~The one holding the most territory, possessed of the best weapons and having the largest, best trained population to put under arms at the time in question. The question is inane. How do you propose to compare the Persian Immortals with the Roman Legions.

But, if history gives any answer at all, it is clear that the combined might of the various Teutonic tribes were the ones ultimately successful since they and their cousins founded (and later conquered) Rome, conquered and settled Great Britain, France, the Iberian Peninsula, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and the rest of Eurpope and their descendants founded The US, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Australia, South Africa and Rhodesia and continue to rule most of them today. Their only ultimate defeats in battle came at the hands of fellow Teutons.

Asia is another matter, but no Asian group ever matched the power and might or the breadth of empire of the combined Teutons.

I don't know what Richard is saying about Europeans living in huts 2000 years ago. 2000 years ago was during the Roman empire which has structures still standing today. Also before that were the greeks in greece and the etruscans in northern Italy which were the foundations of the Roman empire. The Etruscans had a written language as far back as 1500 B.C, only problem is we lost most records and have a hard time translating. Before that around 2700 B.C was the minoans off the islands of greece who were so advanced they had flushing toilets and showers 4700 years ago. But yea china was the most advanced at many points of history but it shifts. the latest I would say is after the Middle eastern golden ages ( which invented algebra and first mechanical robot) so last time china was the most advanced which isnt their first was about 1100-1500. But by the 1500's europe started to become more advanced.

Everyone learns more about the history of their region of the world, and concentrates on the time period when they had the most power. An overview of the past civilizations with a timeline http://www.answers.com/topic/ancient-history shows that no one region/country/empire/civilization held the top position throughout history.
