Dig a hole about 2 1/2' round and deep. Take the soil that you removed and add 1 bag of vermiculite and 1/2 bag perlite, mix with the soil, use the mix for backfill.

Clay soil is very challenging to grow anything in. My experience with my own yard has been to top dress with aged compost. The earthworms will move towards the surface to feed on the compost. The worms tunnelling through the clay and depositing castings assists with amending very hard clay soil. There is no quick fix.

We have a lot of clay in my area. Roto till and then sow seed. Fertilize and keep the soil moist and you should be OK. That's what we do.
