I'll be amazed if you can tell me under what conditions they breed. I think I have an idea, but I'm not sure.

The males have a wider head and larger pelvic fins usually. This can best be seen in a tank with quite a few individuals to compare.

Breeding has not been documented in an aquarium environment.

if by rubber nosed algae eater you mean the rubbernose plec or "Chaetostoma", then sexing will be similar to most other plecs. The males have a somewhat larger and broader head, slimmer ventral sides and disproportionately large pelvic fins.

apparently there's not many reported cases of many Chaetostoma species breeding in captivity.

You can't tell the gender of egg laying fish unless they are one that the male is a different color than the female.
