It has always been a little off but about a week ago when I filled up my truck the bar indicated that it was only half full. Is this one of those things that solve themselves or do I have to do some surgery? If so, how major? I have a '98 Ram with a 5.2 L V8 Magnum

was it working before you put the gas in ? if so - you didn't put the cap on tight enough , wait until you add gas again and when you replace the cap listen for it to click 3 times and the problem will fix itself - it it did not then you might need to repplace the fuel pump.

Fuel gauges are notoriously inaccurate and not consistent throughout their range. If you have this type of problem sometimes its simple to get in and replace the unit but please exercise extreme caution on any fuel related work and make sure you are definite its all sealed up again after the work. If you have any doubts at all about doing it yourself take it to the shop.

The fuel pump and fuel level indicator are one unit. Here is a photo of it: http://info.rockauto.com/Airtex/Detail2.html?http://www.airtexproducts.com/cgi-bin/AirtexImages/AIRTEXEFP/E7138M.JPG They cost about $200.

The problem might solve itself or gradually start occurring more frequently.
