Who is a well-known (or not) black woman that was arrested and tried for doing something that women were not allowed to do back in the 1900s? Please provide links if possible, I am working on an English honors project and I need a few names so I will be able to do research. Thank you.

Marie-Joseph Angélique was a slave owned by a Quebec man. She was executed in 1734 for burning down the house and killing him. It was later found out that he beat her constantly and was going to sell her away from her children. Very tragic sad example of the cruelty of one group of humans towards a minority.
Also check out Harriet Jacobsl who wrote the book Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, about her experiences of being owned and how she found her freedom through courage and perseverence. This is based on the true story of Linda Brent.
