I have a pampas grass which has now outgrown the area where it is growing. Is there an easy way to remove the root ball,as it is as hard as timber? It is about 2ft across You cannot chop the rootball. I have sawn the grass to ground level but want to take it out completely.A spade just bounces off the ball. Recomendations please

get a sharp point shovel or maddox pick and make a circle around the plant about 2 or 3 ft in diameter. then youll probably have to rent a dingo or a bobcat with fork attachments and just pop that thing out of there. next time if you like ornamental grasses, try dwarf pampas grass which only gets 5 ft or miscanthus morning light

Sprinke some weedkiller over it, and keep an eye on it for a few weeks and then re-weedkill as any new sprouts appear. We did exactly the same thing 2 years ago and now we have turf growing over the site. Don't bother digging it up, the weedkilling method does work.

It is a tough job. You have to dig far enough out around it to allow you to cut through the roots. It will be a large hole when your done. I would start about 2 or 3 feet out from the plant and try to dig under it.

Try looking at your local rental companies and find a small stump grinder. Take out all the roots and use the grindings for mulch.

We had one of these a few years back Took me a fortnight of digging every day to get it out the ground. You have to dig it out. I did it manually, but you could hire one of those diggery thingys. depends how much time you got, how much money you got, how much patience you got. Good luck. Don't plant another one!!!
