I was put in the hospital numerous amounts of times, this past time I had a breathing tube for 3 days and I almost died. I just found out i'm pregnant (7 weeks). Is it wrong of me to keep the baby? I'm so scared, i've kind of had a bad pregnancy so far, not with asthma, but I thought I was having a miscarriage. I went to the hospital and everything was fine. I know doctors have medicine they can give me if I have an asthma attack, but i'm sooo scared about it. Has anyone been through this?

It sounds like we are kindred spirits. I also suffer from severe asthma and have all of my life. The doctors have tried everything to help me. I am currently taking Pulmicort and Albuterol as well as nebulizer treatments. I might start singulair in addtion. I tried advair and lots of other stuff but they didn't work.

I have also had a bad pregnancy with bleeding/cramping. Then I developed hypertension and gestational diabetes.

I started out with endometriosis and fibroids. I lost four babies prior to this fifth attempt taking. My husband and I are also carriers for Cystic Fibrosis so we have had our share of tribulations but I am so grateful to be having this baby.

I have daily asthma attacks-although not so bad that I have to use my epi-pen. The doctors monitor my peak-flow and the albuterol works. Don't be scared about taking asthma medicine. The benifits definately outweigh the risks. I have gone on blogs where women took albuterol ALOT and their babies turned out fine. The only real risk to the baby is you not getting adequite oxygen. Don't terminate, you and baby will be fine as long as you keep your asthma appointments and take whatever asthma and allergy meds you need.

Good luck. Email me if you have any more questions.

Asthma is an allergy and is triggered by something. The best non medication treatment for asthma is learning your triggers and avoiding them. Common triggers are smoke, dust, mold, mildew, plants, dust mites, pets and grass/weeds.

If you can not figure our your triggers, you may need to see an allergist and have allergy screening done. This may point out your triggers.

The National Asthma Prevention Program and the Expert Panel of Diagnosis and Management of Asthma both agree if you have to use a prescription inhaler such as albuterol more then two time per week, your asthma is NOT in control and you will need a prescription controller medication.

Controller medications are steroids (Asthmacort Asthmanex, Flovent, Pulmocort), Leukotriene modifier (Singulair, Aculade, Zyflo) or mast cell stabilizers (Cromolyn sodium, Intal, Tilade).

You may want to talk to your doctor about several strong controller medications and maybe Xolair shots.

If you want a proven, all-natural way to cure your asthma, without having to pay for useless medications with harmful side-effects, then this is the most important page you'll ever read.

I haven't been through it exactly, but I do have asthma - so I can relate somewhat.
Congrats on your pregnancy! You should be happy, and let the doctors figure out the best care for you. Get two, heck - even three opinions if this bothers you so much, but I am sure you are not the first or the last mom to be with this severe condition. You will get through this - you have to believe in the positive.
Now is the time for you to research "mommy and me" centers where you live - a place where pregnant moms and new moms come to get outside-of-the-hospital-care; prenatal yoga, massage, group "venting" etc. You need a network and a "security blanket". You need support, and trust me, you are not alone.

So take a semi deep breath - and learn how to relax. Let the Dr.s worry and come up with a plan. Enjoy your pregnancy. Good luck!

I have horrible asthma w/ a case of bronchitus. I take ADVAIR, which is a class C in medicine in pregnancy. Which means there hasn't been any reports or signs of fetal defects. I have been taking ADVAIR since I got pregnant. I also have a back up inhaler for an attack. I don't get attacks but I am now 21W3D pregnant with a little boy. Everythign is fine. So your fine just take your medicine. Think about it, if you don't take it, you and your baby don't get air supply. Keep the baby and take care. Good luck.

You will be ok! Talk to you doc about your options.

I have mild to moderate asthma, and I was worried about it, too. But, in my case, my asthma actually improved during my pregnancy!

When you are pregnant, you have a higher blood volume. I think that could mean that you have more oxygen in your blood, too, which might help. I'm not sure.

The good news is, you can still take many asthma medications during pregnancy. Hang in there!

I have had asthma since I was born and since I have gotten older it has gotten worse. During my pregnancy I used ADVAIR and Albuterol inhalers. They also told me to watch for things that may trigger my asthma... (almost everything lol) But everything was fine... my son was healthy and actually has not been diagnosed with asthma... he is a happy healthy very active 2 1/2 year old.

It is NOT wrong to keep the baby. Staying pregnant is not a bad thing. You will need to work closely with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to adjust your treatment regimen accordingly. You will need to follow the doctor's instructions closely. It will now be more important for you to make sure you eat right and provide the best possible care to your lungs and body than ever before in your life. I wish you the best! Have a happy and healthy pregnancy!

God will give you as much as you can handle. Talk to your Dr. I know many women who have made it through pregnancies with severe asthma. You may end up in a "high risk pregnancy" situation, but terminating a pregnancy for this type of situation would be a very simple, yet selfish decision. I wish you all the best. I myself have been through 7 pregnancies with only 2 births. Pray about it and speak to your physician.
