If you drive in temps over 100, 10W30. That's just how thick the oil is. You'd use 5W30 if you were driving in cold weather, like 0 degrees, because it gets flowing faster and in greater volume during cold starts.

5w 30 and 10w 30 are the viscosity numbers for multi-viscosity oils. The higher the number, the thicker the oil. What multi-viscosity oils do, is they become 'thicker' at higher temperature, and 'thinner' at low temperatures. The reason for this is that when it gets cold outside, regular 30w oil can become like thick syrup, making it hard to start your engine, as the thick oil creates resistance to the moving parts. So 5w30 becomes 5w (thinner) below 32 degrees farenheit, making it easier to start your engine. Once the engine warms up the oil, the oil 'thickens' and becomes 30w for greater protection to moving parts. Therefore, you only need 5w30 if temperatures where you live drop below freezing in the winter. If not, 10w30 is fine. I live in Las Vegas, and always use 10w30.

The lower the number, the lower the viscosity (that is, the thinner the oil is). In South Texas, you'll be fine with 10W-30.

if i were in south texas i would run the 10w 30 year round....diffeent numbers are the weight of the oil...the viscosity.....5w starts off lighter so it gets moving through the engine better on startup for like winter settings...however where you are you dont need a lighter oil being its hot year round....you need the heavier 10w

10w-30 is better in your climate, it is a litter thicker on start-up than the 5w-30.
