Morning is the best time to water, because it gives the grass moisture to deal with the hot day. I would say if you wanted to water for a few minutes in the afternoon, that would be good too. If it's really hot, everyday or everyother day at most would work. Evening is bad because it doesn't give the grass a chance to dry out overnight.

Use a timer. Set it to 4 am every other day. A neighborhood golf coarse waters all night. The section set at 4 am looks the most lush, and grows the best and is the greenest. Timers can be bought for $20.00 at Home Depot.

HI,
Grass should be watered early in the morning, ie: our sprinkler sytem comes on at 2:00AM, goes through 12 zones and stops at 5:00AM. this gives the ground, grass and flowers enough time to soak in the moisture, before the sun starts getting hot on them. We water as needed, wathch the weather, and in really dry spells, it comes on every night.
Hope this helps

The best time to water is in the evening when the sun is down and it is cooler. We water 3 times a week when it's dry.

Early morning, to reduce evaporative losses. Once every five days or so is probably sufficient during a dry spell.

No matter where you live, if it's dry and hot out, water at night or in the morning, and every other day or so should keep your lawn alive.
