The absolute best astronomy book on the market is a 3 Volume set: "Burnham's Celestial Handbook: An Observer's Guide to the Universe Beyond the Solar System"

These run about $16.00 per volume on Amazon.com. There is absolutely nothing which compares to it. Very accessible information on every single constellation, all of their stars, deep sky objects; and explanations for nearly every astronomical fact complete with b/w photos and drawings. His explanation of stellar evolution is one of the most lucid in the literature.

I cannot recommend these books more highly. Before you buy anything else, consider these three. You will be glad you did.

Best one I have come across is:

ASTRONOMY, by Ian Ridpath, DK Publishing, NY, NY.

Lots of Pics, and illustrations with excellent narration and discussions. Terrific star charts, and many maps of the Moon,
and Mars which are neat to use in tracking progress of the Rovers.
