... and why. This is a corellary to my movies question. I am looking for episodes and shows that, years after you watch them, still stick to your mental "ribs".
My favorites for disturbing or "stick to your ribs" television are:
1) The Twilight Zone. So many that are so disturbing. However, it was a "quiet" show. Most people did not find it as disturbing as myself.
2) The Outer Limits. Some of their episodes were, to me, silly, but it had many episodes that challenged your concept of humanity itself and NOT in a nice way.
3) The Night Gallery. What the Twilight Zone became later. Not as good as the Twilight Zone.
4) Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Well, what can you say about that... it is Alfred Hitchcock. Not only disturbing but, courtesy of Hitchcock's dry humur, blood hilarious. That man had a truly warped and twisted mind. Gotta love him.

Twilight zone, obvious I know. But it was one where everyone was forced to undergo plastic surgery and had 12 models of faces to choose from. They were expect to look act and feel the same when they reached a certain age. To be honest it really scared me.Even today, so many people think that should be the ideal, through religion, orientation, race, culture, etc.
EDIT: OOH I know one that I was absolutely addicted to. Wish they still had it. Mtv's Fear. My God. I would turn out all the lights and scare myself senseless. Though in thinking back, I'm not too sure it was a good idea to film a t.v. show on grounds where people had been murdered, tortured, etc. It's disrespectful. I know some of the stories brought a tear to my eye.

Welllll.......
I used to like The Twilight Zone as a kid. And of course Hitchcock. Hitchcock was my favourite scary thing on Sunday nights when I was a kid. I even got all his funny little magazines and spent hours reading them. Oh when scary stories were actually easy AND scary and droll.
I can only think of one programme that sticks to the bones and NEVER leaves. Six Feet Under, a darkly comic look at life and death from the perspective of a dysfunctional family that owns and operates an independent funeral home in California.
You really don't want to get me started on this one. Fabulous amazing photography, the camera almost catches the thoughts of the characters. Witty writing. Very real yet very bizarre. When death is your business, what is your life? For the Fisher family, the world outside of their family-owned funeral home continues to be at least as challenging as--and far less predictable than--the one inside.
Every character is amazing, believable, complex and given equal opportunity to shine. Acting is beyond good. Writing is brilliant. Black humour runs amok and NOTHING is sacred. Every taboo on the planet is touched upon somehow yet it alll works.
Typical quote: There is a rumor going around town that my sister put a dismembered foot in some boy's locker.
Each programme begins showing the death of someone, right out of left field. That character and the funerals set the theme for the show and it all blends seamlessly into some of the very best drama ever created for television. This programme raised the television bar a LOT higher.
Guess you can tell I liked it. My daughters and I have managed to collect every set of the show. It is all YOUR fault Justaguy. You got me ranting about this show and now you are going to get quotes!
Nate: Look, I have to go identify our dead father's body. I'm sorry you're having a bad drug experience, but deal with it.
Brenda: The future is just a f*cking concept that we use to avoid living today.
[In front of a casket]
Elderly Man: You did a real good job on her.
David: Well, we do our best.
Elderly Man: If there's any justice in the universe, she's shoveling sh*t in hell right now.
Claire: I know stealing a foot is weird. But, hello, living in a house where a foot is available to be stolen is weird.
Claire: I wish I was gay.
David: Ohh, no.
Claire: Well, then I wouldn't have to deal with unfamiliar sex organs!
David: They're all unfamiliar unless they're yours.
(Darn I am sorry but I am laughing at all of these. It is like trying to only eat one chip.)
Officer Keith Charles: [talking to David about marriage] You're in my will, I'm in yours. We basically are married, even if the law refuses to recognize it. But then again, I refuse to recognize most of the Bush Administration. I guess it all evens out.
Darn I am sorry but I am laughing at all of these. It is like trying to only eat one chip. I tend to get very enthusiastic over this programme.. ROFL. I am sure that was hard to figure out.
Did I mention the sound track is amazing?

Last weeks' episode of "House" starring the actor Hugh Laurie was rather unsettling to me. I usually really enjoy the humor and strangeness of the that show, but watching the actor go through drug addiction withdrawals was disturbing to me. I hope the next episode I watch is more entertaining.

Project Terror. It was on on friday nights. It probably was the worst for me because it's the one I watched at the youngest age. There was another, most people don't remember, around the time, maybe a little later, as Night Gallery. It was called Circle of Fear. It was pretty good.
