It is best to submit your application on-line.

Employers have gone to using software like "Taleo" to receive resumes, assess employees, and manage their recruiting process. For this reason, it is highly likely that if you submit a resume in person, you will be directed to the website anyway.

I highly recommend that you use "in-person" to follow-up (after you have gotten a name, and tried the phone FIRST)

In-person is the best way, I feel, to get a prospective employer to know that you are interested. It also lets him see more of you then he can get off the paper. So if you make a good impression, he is much more likely to consider you.

Obviously my view isn't the majority in here but I'm just going on my experiences. I have never recieved a job offer through an online application, though everytime I handed the application/resume to the direct supervisor I always at least had an interview.

If you really want your resume to get read and considered, call the company and try to get the name of the person that is hiring. Send a letter & resume directly to that person. By fax is even better.

Make sure you state in your cover letter that you will be following up in the next few days. I even state a time that I will call to follow up to make sure he received my resume. For example: "Thank you for your consideration of my resume, to make sure that you have received it, and in case you have any questions about my background or qualifications, I will give you a call on Wednesday, between 2 & 4pm."

Good luck

Many places only accept online applications now. I say do both. Fill it out online, print a copy and take it with your resume to their office in person.

Yes. Most companies actually prefer that you submit your resume online. I have found a few jobs this way. Good luck.

Large companies expect online or snail mail. You would not receive a warm reception showing up at the door. Your application would end up in the large, circular file.

For the most part, I don't think it matters. If you see it on the site, there is no need to go through a third party. I say go direct, also that way there is no chance that there is a middle man (like a recruiter) involved.
