Some people, then and now, use signs. They just write their destination on a piece of card board and stick it out there and see who stops.

Yes, and there still are. While using 'the thumb' is the 'international sign' for wanting a free ride' there are 'other ways' to get a ride ... using a 'sign' with the city or location you want to get to is the most common, or you can just 'stand on the road and look sad and lost' if it's a 'normal stop for hitchikers to get a ride.
