I just dont know what to do a ethernet cable just would'nt
be practible as im quite a way off from the router

No software exists that can do what you describe.

You could possibly obtain a wireless adapter with an external antenna so that it pulls in signals better, and/or buy a wireless range extender, which is a powered device you could put maybe halfway between your computer and wireless router to boost the signal strength.

If you mean you want to be able to see your wireless connection in the system tray, windows can place it there.

Just right click My Network Places located on your start menu & click properties. You will see local area connection ( which is your lan connection) & the wireless adapter installed. Right click the wireless adapter and click properties, at the bottom of the windows select: "show icon in notification area when connected". and click ok. you will then be able to see the notification icon for the wireless network in your tray.

You need to be within range of the router in order for the computer to pick up on the signal.

I have XP laptop and Vista laptop. Both do that without any grief. When you turn on the laptop it sees the signal and you are connected. There is no trick to it.
