He was asked that years ago when he played in Buffalo. His answer was he is most comfortable with that type of mask. He said it is something he wore all through his years in the Czech Republic and never changed it when he was drafted by Chicago. Dominik is still my favorite player ever and even though he isnt playing for my beloved Sabres anymore im a huge dominator fan!
By the way his backup Chris Osgood wears the same kind now.

Dominik Hasek wares the old style goalie mask for many reasons such as he feels more comfortable waring such a small and flex able mask. He has said many times when asked this question that he feels most comfortable and relaxed waring it so why change it now... Plus he can see the puck allot better as it's not as bulky and big as the normal masks.

He has been around the block a few times. A lot of players who played in the 1980s or early 90s wear masks like that. The ones they have nowadays were not very common or well made when he started, so he used what they had then. Then he got used to it, so he never changed. It is a matter of personal preference and comfort.

He and Chris Osgood both wear the cage.

They both say they cannot see as well out of the goalie mask.

They said when they look down they can't see the puck.

Plus Osgood says the goalie mask is too tight ftting.

Personal preference. It would go back to probably what was common wherever he played just before entering the NHL.

Masks have different blind spots and glare from light, etc. Once you get use to one, it is hard to switch and get used to something else with different blind spots. His cage isn't as cool, but I believe the cool masks have a blind spot down by your feet, and if the puck is down by your feet you'd want to see it.

Many european goalies used the cage from the time they were small but here in north america kids tried to emulate their heroes in the NHL and so they grew up wearing the mask we are used to. I've tried both playing net and I like the cage better. Once you get used to the bars it has the added advantage of not being as hot.
