The real difference between canon law and secular law:

Canon law was instituted by God, who is the source of all power, knowledge, wisdom, love, and authority. His way is therefore, perfect and superior...and His will never fails. God governs all of creation; and while He gives us freedom to choose - every soul that breaths, is and will be accountable to Him, whatever their choice.

Secular law was instituted by sinful, erring man - whose power, knowledge, wisdom, love, and authority...are limited and warped. Man's way is therefore, flawed. No matter how hard he tries, and how good his intentions - man will never be able to come up with the perfect government; they can hardly live up to the laws they themselves, set. Don't believe me? Look around.... Then, look up. Man's law only applies to those within a given domain. The only ones accountable to it, are its citizens and visitors.

Canon law applies to a religious denomination. The rules of the church, so to speak. Secular law applies to a society or rules of a country.
