I have an "02 Dodge Durango and just started making a ticking or tapping sound. the sound seems to be coming from the engine. It is a 4x4. I have never had any trouble with it until now. any idea on what may be causing this?

Sounds like possible valve lifters?

They may simply need to be adjusted.

Try an oil supplement like LUCAS. I've heard alot of Dakotas tick like that. The 4.7 V8 is notorious for it.

it sure sounds like it's the lifters i would check the oil level first and also oil pump(slim chance but can't hurt to check)find out if they are able to be adjusted(some can't be)if its not in your finance range next alternative would be an additive such as Lucas .

you forgot to tell us how many miles on it , and if you have change the oil recently sometimes when your oil gets old . 4000, miles or more is gets thin and losses its viscocity .causing the metal to metal to have more fricction
you see the oil acts as a shock absorber , coolant and lubricant .
