It started with the Italians. They wanted an easy conquest in North Africa, so they took over Libya sometime before WWI. Egypt was an British protectorate, as was Palestine, mainly because the British wanted to protect the Suez Canal, a vital lifeline to the oil of the Middle East and the colony of India.
Churchill wanted to take a stab at Italy. He considered it to be a weak link in the Axis, and he was right. So the British began to fight with the Italians. Or, rather, the Italians began surrendering en masse to the British, without even fighting. After one of the first important battles the British commander remarked, "Never have so many surrendered so much to so few."
The Germans couldn't tolerate this, so Rommel was sent into North Africa to drive the British out. This was never more than a sideshow for the Germans, as the much more important attack on Russia was underway at the same time. Nevertheless the British had their hands full with Rommel, who was a wily and skillful commander. The Americans landed in North Africa towards the end of 1942 to help the British and to toughen up American troops. General Patton was very successful against Rommel, and soon the Americans invaded Sicily and then Italy.
In my opinion the entire campaign against Italy was a waste of time. Mussolini could have been bribed to drop out of the war, but the Allies wouldn't consider this.
