No studies have ever been done on this. Relativity in and of itself is not an easy phenomenon to understand mathematically.

Here are my guesses, as a percent of the population of earth:

20% have heard of it
3% have a general idea of what it's about
0.5% can do basic calculations using it
0.3% can tell you its significance in specific cases
0.05% have enough mastery of it so they could pass a graduate or upper level undergraduate course on it
0.000% know why it happens
0.000% can unify gravitation with the other fundamental forces

You don't need to understand it mathematically to understand it. Einstein used his imagination mostly to carry out his thought experiments not just maths.
