It's not necessarily a bad thing. I went in for my 12 week appointment and the doctor wasn't able to hear the baby's heartbeat. I went in again at 14 weeks and the doctor tried again. Not only did we hear a strongly beating heartbeat, but while we were listening the baby reared back and kicked the doppler twice! (I went in last week for an 18 week appointment and the little bugger kicked the doppler again!)

For right now, just relax. I know it's easier said than done, but it will be better for both of you if you don't stress too much.

Good luck!

If the doctor thought there were something very seriously wrong, he or she would NOT have sent you home to come back next week. You would be in the emergency room right now. So take some deep breaths and relax, because at that early in a pregnancy it can be hard to locate the baby's heartbeat. It is very easy to worry about many things in a pregnancy, but this is not abnormal. There is nothing to worry about. :)

Not always - depending on your build, the position of the placenta, and how active the baby is, it could be difficult to find a heartbeat. Sometimes the doppler devices they use don't pick it up until 13 or 14 weeks. If your doctor was extremely concerned he/she would have ordered an ultrasound. Good luck!

I am not a mother myself, but it sounds like you are reaching out for someone to help put your mind at ease.

I don't know all the circumstances, but I feel that if your doctor felt there was cause for alarm they would have ordered more tests be conducted immediately, and perhaps confined you to bed rest.

I'm not sure if your doctor took an Ultrasound at your 12 week stage, but if they did, I would imagine, again, if something did not appear right, they would proceed to the next step.

The fact that an appointment was set for you to return next week, to me, would indicate that perhaps at 12 weeks, heartbeats may just be very faint.

I'm by no means a doctor, (just a caring person), so I would suggest you call your doctor and be honest with them about your concerns. That would put your mind at ease.

And Congratulations to you!

Proably not. When I was 12 weeks with my first son, they couldnt find a heartbeat either. They rushed me down the hall to get an ultrasound and it just turned out that I wasnt as pregnant as they thought. Could be that. They are having you back next week, and if there is still nothing, ask for an ultrasound if they dont call for one. Good luck!

It's not bad. I've heard that sometimes it's hard to find the heartbeat so early on in the pregnancy. Don't worry about it until after your next appt.

Early on, they could only find my baby's heartbeat via an internal wand ultrasound thing. I was 14 weeks along before they picked it up on the regular doppler thing they use in the office, so don't worry about it too much just yet!

May or may not be. Your doc *should* be able to find the heartbeat by 8 weeks. Sometimes they can't. I wouldn't worry about it until the appointment next time. They will probably do an ultrasound at that time to check things out as well. Good luck!

It happened to me before, then she was going to do an ultrasound and was called away on an emergency. I panicked but everyone around me acted as if it were no big deal. Luckily, they scheduled me for the ultrasound later in the week and everything was fine.
You are not the first person to ask this question so obviously it's not that uncommon of an occurrence. I hope everything turns out well for you and your child.

This happened with both my pregnancies. I have a tilted uterus, meaning uterus is closer to the back. If your doctor doesn't hear a heartbeat next week they may do an ultrasound to hear the heartbeat. Good Luck!
