how people express themselves in art?

I have an assingment in school and need to write a preliminary outline on "how people express themselves in art"
it can be any type of art. drawing, poetry, music, design.

can anyone help me out?

I'm a pro photographer, and I recently covered the opening of an exhibition of art created by people from psychologically and emotionally disadvantaged backgrounds.

One of the exhibitors told me that before she discovered art she was not always able to express herself verbally, and often felt frustrated and cut off.

Now she can paint the abstraction that is how she feels; the sense of release which this brings allows her to live her life instead of enduring it, while creating a thing of beauty for others.

These are my words for her description, but the point remains -
Art can transform us; it can say what we cannot

You have a great example of the Virginia Tech shooter and his works of art. He wrote a couple of plays in which he expressed his rage at the older generation.
