How did it become an imperialistic power?

Well, the seas helped Japan in achieving an isolationist policy, plus the fact that the Tokugawa Shogunate dynasty decided to kill off any European that stepped on Japan, along with any chistianized or pro-west japanese.

Since Japan did not really have a significant market of raw materials, the european nations left it alone until the mid-19th Century, when they felt Japan could be a market to sell manufactured goods. It was then that a group of Japanses warlords decided that they prefered a strong Emperor who would not let the country be conquered. This is called the Meiji restoration, and many of the samurai that fought to restore the Emperor's power later became the officers of a modernized army by importing and adopting western weaponry. With nowhere in Japan to go aside from quelling the ocassional rebellion, these folks decided to start a campaign of conquest themselves. First in the Corean Peninsula, then against Russia, and then all over the Pacific.
