well I was reading an article on the Guardian website, about kate middleton, and there was something about Prince William's mates making fun of her background, that her mother is an air stewardess.
What on earth is wrong with being an air hostess, for heaven's sake?

Those that do, have a low opinion of every profession. Old money doesn't need to work for a living. Of these, the younger generation, not having lived through periods of national hardship (esp Post War UK), are just too aloof from the concept of the value of money.

air hostesses are seen to be actively working, ie her mother worked for a living, in a society where professions describe rights and not the level of income you can put a foot wrong, if on the other hand you work as a solicitor-----very very likely to be poorly paid in comparison to a barrister then you are very much still in the middle class, or as the research think tank type speak would be "middle of the road", regardless of income, of course you must be consciously aware of the connotations of class, ie that the origins for this amusement must surely be derived from the fact that the middletons are clearly not aristocracy, middle class yes but not exclusive enough, on the other hand you would be patriotic to the extent that you might say, well x y z must be absolutely from the best most exclusive background in order to be good enough for our prince.

You should not always believe what now a days these tabloids are reporting. Only half of them what they tell you might be truthfull.
I think the main reason is that Prince William has realized, that his career and preperation in the armed forces will be in the way to maintain his relationship with Kate Middelton.
However, it also might be the truth that the media has contributed to their exstrained friendship. Who knows only they know.

Absolutely nothing at all. The same would have been said about most jobs. It's just that a future King is usually expected to marry someone from an aristocratic background.

Kate is not considered of the upper echelon of society and therefore SOME of the members of the house of Windsor may not be thrilled by their togetherness!
...but don't believe what you read in the papers, not even in the Guardian!! The truth lies elsewhere!

I wouldn't believe anything you read in the papers about this. They're trying to sell papers, that's all. We never know what goes on behind the scenes, and this includes when looking at photos of the ex-couple. A lot of people thought they looked happy, but we don't know what was said in private. Sometimes Diana looked happy too, but was she really? Similarly, if I don't hear something from that person's mouth directly, I won't believe it.

Nothing at all, but I think the Royal family expect the next Queen of England to come from somewhere higher up the social scale!

If you're a toff, there's a whole lot wrong with being an air hostess. The main one is that you're not a toff.
