Because they are far and away the most heavy duty , reliable car anywhere near it's price range. The abuse that police vehicles and taxis are subjected to is ridiculous. These cars run 24/7 idling for hours without overheating , run at top speed for long periods of time without overheating, blowing engines, transmissions, etc , drive over curbs, potholes, ruts, and any other road hazards without much concern to the vehicle at all. They do this while carrying at least 2 full grown people and a couple hundred pounds of equipment-flares,medical supplies, rescue equipment, tools, guns, etc.,all the while getting over 20mpg. These vehicles do this for a couple years when they are sold at auction to cab companies who will run them into the groundto upwards of 300-400k miles. Sorry but Hondas ain't beating that.

FORD offers the Crown Vic in a true Police Package, in this package they have beefed up the suspension, the cooling system and the wiring harness. It is offered in Police Package with a V/8 and in the Taxi Package with either a V/8 or a V/6 engine. All Crown Vics are rear wheel drive.
Dodge offers 2 versions of the Dodge Charger with V/6 or V/8 Police Package and rear wheel drive.
GM offers the Malibu and Impala with a Police Package but these are used mostly by smaller departments. They are front wheel drive.
Back to the Crown Vic, the Police Package is offered in Government/Law Enforcement financing and also in Lease packages. They are not cheap, but economical for the abuse they are given. Many large departments lease these on a 1 or 2 year lease, to cut down on their maintenance cost.
The Crown Vics are available to private individuals, but NOT in the beefier Police Package. Mercury also offers the same vehicle as a Grand Marquis, but it is not available in a Police Package.
The reason so many agencies are switching to Yukons, Tahoes and Expeditions is the heavy duty construction, extra space and the resale value.

They are big and powerful. Plus they can be ordered with a police package and come from the factory ready to go. Ford and the police departments have had a good relationship for many years. There was a problem with the gas tanks earlier but that has been repaired now.
A lot of police still use the Crown Vic for their cars, in spite of what some other people say.
They are dependable, built for the job, and fill a need.
Besides that, they are "BUILT FORD TOUGH"

Dependable and inexpensive. The first answer is not necessarily correct. It is not designed specifically for use as a taxi or police cruiser. It has been around for many years and in the 90's Ford apparently got many contracts for taxi's and police cars. Over time I'm sure engineers have developed the car to become even better suited to their needs, but you can still buy one for private use.

They are a full size roomy rear wheel drive. The North American police have many features, such as GPS, direct link lap top computer, communication radio + their partner. It all takes up interior space. Officers complain that the Chevy Impalas, being front wheel drive, have to compensate for torque steer & are harder to control. They are a smaller vehicle inside & out.

They are large enough to have a comfortable backseat. Are very tough and rugged. And think about it, it's a domestic product (state and federal agencies would be doing their country a dis-service by using foreign products and thus not supporting their own economy) It's likely that Ford gives them a significant bulk price, which makes it a lot cheaper.

It's about the last big American passenger sedan. All the other big autos are mini-vans or SUVs.
The Crown Vic is "full-size" even though it has been "downsized".
Long live the V8!
