Canner obviously a Ballerina!!! Lol!!! They are there to hold their Shinpads in the correct position during a match, and dont ya think it would look stupid if Twenty two players went out on a football pitch wearing just Shinpads or Shinpads with ankle socks?

Partly to contain their shin pads. if you dont wear long socks any contact is against your skin whereas socks may give you a certain level of protection in small contacts.
Also more advertising space lol

Cover up the shin guards and hold them in place, and just so that they can wear a little bit more team color. Stylish and functional.
