What does the eye symbolize?

Looking for information on what the eye symbolizes. Egyption culture and the occult have strong ties to the eye I know, but is it incorporated into any other cultures? Also what about the symbol of an eye in western culture?

The "all seeing eye" is a Western adoption, symbolizing the presence of a higher power whose vision over all earthly things is constant and unblinking (see the reverse of your US dollar bill).

In certain Mediterranean cultures the symbol of an eye (usually framed in the palm of a hand) is used as protection against "the Evil Eye," a curse cast by witch to cause harm, ill luck or even death.

The eye as a graphic device is also used in Indian and African religions, Voodoo, Alchemy and ceremonial magic and organizations including Freemasonry.
