The initial draw is visual appeal.

Gold is relatively soft so it's easy to shape. A lot of cultures used gold for decoration - Ancient Egyptians and the Aztecs, Incas. I'm sure the ancients thought they were working with sunbeams in solid form.

Diamonds - I'm not really familiar with how someone discovered cutting a diamond makes a get that catches the light. But the draw their is the visual. Diamonds were thought to be magical originating as tears from God.

With both gold and diamonds, supply/demand and bartering come into play. As more people, cultures, societies wanted those products, they became valuable as a commodity.

In ancient times, I'd give you a goat for that gold ring... and it progressed from there to current times.
