I am wanting to etch some drinking glasses to match my dishes. I am wondering if after I etch on my design if anyone knows if I can use glass paint over the etched marks for color. Is the glass paint safe to use on drinking glasses? Is it dishwasher safe?

Thank you everyone that is able to help me out.

Thank you RavingLooney. It sounds like I might just be better off just etching them. My plates have a block pattern around the edge in differnt colors that I thought might be fun to duplicate. Sounds like just doing the blocks with no color is the way to go.

I actually do this as a hobby and have been for 4 years now they arent dishwasher safe as most glass paints come off in extream heat that the drying in a dishwasher uses. also abrasive dish cloths and sponges are a no no. Other wise glass paint is idea for the job and I hope you enjoy it it is a very rewarding hobby. Your idea sounds fabulous and should work get good quality paints as cheap ones tend to run.

I can give you one positive answer. Pebeo Vitrea 160 paint, sold at http://www.dickblick.com will work on glassware. Once dried and baked for 40 minutes at 325 F, the paints are permanent and dishwasher safe.Included in the line are frosted paints for an etched glass look.

All the answers about using a blade are sound but there is one more thing you should do first.Using a sharp but rigid blade, like a Stanley knife, score the paint between the glass and wood then, when you scrape the paint off the glass you will have a clean edge.
