I've always heard the argument that people need guns to 'protect themselves'. Yet, unless you're alert 24 hours a day, gun loaded and at the ready, waiting for a criminal to violate you or your property, how do you know that you'll be able to get to your gun in time to protect yourself? It's not like criminals call and make an appointment so that you'll be ready for them.

And, what about those people who have a gun for protection but who have it locked away to ensure its safety? Do they really think that the criminal is going to wait while they go and get their gun and load it to ensure a fair fight?

What about the situations that are escalated because both parties have a gun? If the criminal has a gun do you honestly think he's going to run because you have one too? Also, remember the criminal has the advantage, he's planned things out, he knows you're going to be victimized before you do...he's going to have the chance to shoot you before you shoot him.

Just curious...

Interesting. I never said I was in favor of taking guns away from law abiding citizens. I never said that they wouldn't work in certain situations. I was merely asking a sincere question, trying to gain an understanding of both sides of the equation.

I was looking for thoughtful responses that would give me insight into the beliefs and mindset of those who own guns for their "safety". Of course, I guess that, by answering with defensive posturing instead of thoughtful intelligence, most of you have given me insight into your thought process.

Well many of your statements are true.
I keep one loaded and ready in a very strategic spot. I have never had to use it, hope I don't ever have to use it, but it's there.
I pity the stupid fool who breaks into my home and threatens my family. I WILL defend myself. I'm not going to call 911 and wait 20 minutes for the cops to came and draw circles around my family members.

Man these arguments get more lame each day. My shotgun is right next to my bed loaded and ready. My 45 is in the den in the end table drawer loaded and ready. No criminal is dumb enough to know a household he or she is about to break into is armed and think they still have an advantage just because they are too. They want the advantage of being armed to be in their favor, and will avoid ANY place that may present any type of equal or better resistance, guaranteed.

I have used firearms for personal protection for over 30 years and have never been sorry I did. I have had the misfortune to see what happens to people who are not able to defend themselves so I prefer to rely on myself and my weapon. There have been instances where I have had to defend myself from the criminal ambitions of others. I hope it never happens to you because it sounds like you are not willing to defend yourself. That's your choice. I will not be a victim.

all of your what ifs can go the other way as well. and, why should we all be sitting ducks for criminals? come on, if they know THEY have the guns and law abiding citizens do not, then what have you got? sitting ducks.
for all your imagined scenarios, the opposites are also possible like where i just happened to have my gun handy and needed to defend my family against an intruder....whatever..........

Let me rephrase this: When an armed lunatic is kicking in your front door to shoot you and rape your wife and kids before he kills them, would you rather have a loaded gun you know how to use on the premises or not?

I do not think I need a gun to protect myself but I can envision many situations in which it would be helpful to have one.

"It's not like criminals call and make an appointment so that you'll be ready for them."

Aren't the Democrats going to propose a bill that require criminals to call and make an appointment before they commit a crime against you? I'm pretty sure it's for the children - you know, so they aren't stressed out and all.

The armed lunatic shouldn't be armed to begin with.
A gun is in short : a killing machine.
I suppose all urban populations shouldn't have access to guns, especially the civilian population (with exceptions to those who reside in sparsely populated areas or outbacks where police intervention may not be swift).
It makes it that much harder for a criminal to purchase one & so much easier to catch a suspect.
It's a one-way road to disaster with current gun laws in the US. Any depressed guy can lose sight of reality & kill indiscriminately.

well logically speaking if someone breaks into your house you will wake up before they get to you, by this time you will have your pistol ready.

besides a gun works for a better defence then asking the criminal to please not rape and or rob you.
