I have been diagnosed with clinical depression. After hearing my family history, which included two depressed parents and a mother who drank and smoked weed while pregnant with me, and giving me nuerological tests, my doctor is pretty sure I am genetically predisposed to depression. I've tried therapy, but I didn't get anything from it. Talking it out doesn't make me feel any better. I've tried altering my behavior and taking up new activities, but nothing fulfills me. I am currently on medication, but it has side effects (insomnia, mood swings, nausea, headaches etc.) just like the three other meds I tried before it. I cannot recall anytime in my life when I considered myself happy and I spend most of my time in a state of total apathy.

Are people like me basically doomed to being unhappy and/or taking medication that may or may not work and has unpredictable side effects? I'd appreciate any thoughts and advice.

And if you read all this, thanks.

No you are not doomed...You may need to get medicine with lets side affects and possibly sleep medication (non narcotic) because insomnia is classic with depression. You know the source as you said but don't blame them for "having you", but be greatful you know your families medical history. Adjust your medicine...Wellbutrin by the way has some of the fewest side affects out there. Exercise, avoid unpleasantries, and maximize things that you like. You can normally find DBSA, Depression Bipolar Support Alliance meetings which are free in almost every community..THe group angle may be nice until you feel stronger to cope on a more personal level. Lastly avoid "Stinkin' Thinkin'", and try to focus on your strengths. Good Luck.

This is a serious suggestion.

A lot of people are helped by religion. When you are prayed over, you can get healed.

I would suggest to join the Catholic Church because it is the Christian church where Jesus resides in bodily form as the Holy Eucharist, as he promised in John 6 and delivered at the Last Supper.

All real Catholic believe in this, and that is why we protect the receiving of the Sacred Host so possessively. If you don't believe, don't touch, is our message.

Nothing can heal you so powerfully as Jesus himself. If you could have gone after him while He was on earth, and asked Him for a cure, He would have healed you.

That was no big deal, considering we still have Him on earth, in the form of Bread and Wine. In Communion, we Catholics ask him for many things. I just had an answer to my prayer as a miraculous healing of a little boy in our family.

I don't only believe in miracles. I depend on them.

After what you wrote, which encompassed all the advice I would have given you but you were already doing it, this is my only advice to you: pray. Immerse yourself in the life of Jesus.

i'm pretty much constantly apathetic. try getting out and meeting new people or try to find something that will distract you. as long as you don't give up because you can't be bothered/ don't see the point of it, it should hopefully at least jolt you out of your normal feelings for a while. trust me, it's worth it even if you go back to apathy afterwards.
are you sure it's not just your natural disposition that leads to your apathy rather than your depression

if you find out if it is possible to be happy, i'd kinda like to know though, cos i wonder it myself

I would consider trying a low carb lifestyle. But more importantly get BUSY.. Get a busy job. Get many busy hobbies you LOVE to do. Travel. DO THINGS. An active mind has less time to fall into a funk.

Its also possible to work towards deciding to BE HAPPY. Its a moral perogitive.

Now that you have tried everything else which has failed to make you well but instead worse, why don't you try Jesus?

What have you got to lose now? He's a very pesent help in time of trouble.

Just call Him! He won't charge you one penny.
