The 10/100000 warrenty of the Kia and the Hyundai appeal to me, also the features for the $$. I hesitated on Hyundai because 2 models reviewed in Consumer guide says there is a "clunk" after 3000mi that can't be fixed. In Yahoo archives there are the good comments and bad. Is the warrenty and features for the $$ worth the chance or do I go for an older more miles popular car to meet my budget?

Have you considered a used Taurus? You can get a good deal on them from the rental companies, or even the Ford dealers on returned lease cars. It was just a thought, and I saw the question. Hope you get the check today, and thiings work out for you guys. Good luck and let me know what you get. Talk to you later.

I am a mechanic and the owner of a 2004 KIA Sorento. The vehicle has been excellent, a few minor problems, all taken care of quickly and FREE.
Because you are asking about a 2006 I can only say IT DEPENDS.... is it USED? With Any USED vehicle whether it is a YUGO or a Mercedes Benz the problems you may have depend not only on the original quality of the vehicle but also how well it has been taken care of. If it is new then You will be responsible for taking care of it ,doing routine maintenance to insure good service and long vehicle life. Failure to do Scheduled Maintenance will Void the Warranty.
If you are loking at a used 2006 perhaps to get the best deal yu may want see if you can make the stretch and buy a new one. KIA and Hyundai have lots of deals.
another note: There has been lots of sharing of technology between Mazda ( Ford), Hyundai,Kia ,Mitsubishi ( Chrysler)- not obvious to most consumers but noticeable to many mechanics. Usually in the area of powertrain.

Hyundai's product quality has improved tremendously over the last few years. Today their product quality is on par with the Japanese; perhaps its the best kept secret in the car business. Hyundai still suffers from perception of poor product quality that stem from the 1980's and 90's when they really did bring in sub-standard vehicles for sale

Kia, which is owned in part by Hyundai still has its share of product problems although they are getting better. They are not at the level of Hyundai at this time.

the 10/100,000 mile warranty was started to counter the perceptions of poor product quality and is a marketing strategy rather than a statement of confidence in the vehicle by the manufacturer. Essentially, it was the only way the manufacturer could get people to consider a Hyundai or Kia in the late 1990's because of their previous product problems.

I wouldn't hesitate on a 2006 Hyundai. I'd be careful on a Kia.

Hope that helps

The early Hyundai's when not very good, but very inexpensive. I think the Accent is too small, the Elantra is nice, then I purchased a 2001 Tiburon 5-speed two tone leather interior power sunroof CD etc.

The warranty is what got to to test drive the Hyundai.I Currently have 110,000 miles and love driving it every day. My Tiburon has never clunked!
so good luck.
