WOW! The answers you got on this one amazes me!!!! Just because they can't see God they don't believe in him? You can't see wind, but you know it's there because you can feel it. It's the same way with God! You can't see him, but you can feel him. He has gotten me to where I am today. I don't belieave in all that evolution and atheist crap.

I don't know how old you are. So I will just recommend that you pick up Kiekegaard's Diary and Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil. They are both made up of short concise entries. One is the most prominent Deist existentialist, the other is an Atheist existentialist of equal stature.
Their handling of the question, Is there a god? do we NEED a god? what has been the historical purpose of god? Where is god if we are free? what is the relevance of eternal life?
i I suggest you find out for your self. It is not a simple question to answer, but i believe it is an even harder question to make. Nobody has ever paid such minuscious attention to the problem of god as the existentialists, so if you get nto it a good deist is (supposedly) Jaspers and Heidegger (I assure you i am not smart enough to have read the latter) and on the Atheist camp try Sartre and Camus.

Science, a chemistry teacher once told me was the belief in the ignorance of experts. I cannot think of a better explanation of why i trust the biologists more than the preachers when it comes down to evolution.

it's not simple. thats the problem.
i can easily say how can you so blindly follow a 1000 year old book that has been reinterpreted 1000 times?
Everyone has different views. Try to see the other side. You'll find it liberating.
I'm not berating your choice. I've seen it from your view too. And i think i've become a better person because of it. But closing yourself off to other views because you don't understand it plainly, right off is dangerous.
There's room enough for all of us, believers (of all faiths and all kinds) and non.
Just a note. You kind of sound degrading in the question. That is part of the problem. The 'believe it or you're dumb' approach. The world is full of mysteries my friend. Question it a little. Question it alot. If you explore and question and come back to the same spot, then all the power to you. If you land somewhere else, then all the better for you. good luck.

I was once religious – a Lutheran. At first I questioned the validity of the holy trinity. Then I questioned the “facts” presented in the Old Testament. Then I questioned why there where so many contradictions in the gospels and why some gospels where left out of the bible. Then I began to question the very nature of God. Then I started to find out the historical origins of concepts presented in the scriptures – and my disillusionment was complete. Some people believe, others don't. For those that do, their decision to follow might be "simple". But if you don't believe, the decision not to follow is easy as pie.

Hi Shelby,

I don't have a need to believe in god. There is no question or circumstance in my life that requires the intervention of a god. I was not raised to believe. The questions that people answer with 'god' are not ones that occupy my thoughts all that much. I don't agonize over the meaning of my life, I'm just happy to have it. I know the difference between right and wrong based on learning to get along with my fellow humans. No need for a list of rules given by a mysterious entity.

I am happy, productive, curious, and basically a good person. I experience the wonder of the world around me without having to invent a being to admire for it's creation.

Hope this helps.

JC

If you really want to know, and aren't just posting to irritate, then I would suggest doing a deep introspective study of what makes it easy for you to believe God.

And why you think y our god ios the correct one, when people who have the same level of devotion, or STRONGER as you, for a different God.

Remember, level of Conviction is proof. Trust me, Hitler has complete faith in his belief system too.

If, however, you want a less secular answer, it is the Holy Spirit that brings Grace to a person, in effect, it comes from the outside. What we do with the gift is our responsiblity, but people that the Holy Spirit has not brought Grace too cannot really believe in God, can they? Be cause unlike you, the have not recieved the Grace of God, and with out that... well, you get the idea.

I'm a scientific reform jew and I say that g-d is not even a being, but a spritual presence that lives in everything all over the universe, so as long as your living in g-d's world you are respecting g-d. I see g-d as 'the force" on Star Wars, or kind of like mother nature or father time. I believe that g-d created the universe, but did not plop down the earth all pre-made. So in a way I believe in creationism of the universe, not of Adam and Eve, but then again my torah portion isn't in genisis. I think that everyone spirtual on earth is basically just saying thank you to g-d evryday for creating existance itself, and so maybe some people don't say thank you. If I gave 3 children, each a cookie and the first one thanked me, the 2nd one did not thank me, and the last one yelled at me and called me an evil person for giving them and cookie, and then they ate it, I would only be mad at the 3rd person.

People have their own way of looking at the meaning of GOD.
1. Religious people learns the meaning of GOD from their religion's manuscripts and past down knowledges from their priests. And not to forget their rituals which is very important. It is the one thing that truely connects religious people with GOD. Every culture has some of rituals, as the world's civilizations grew bigger and better so did the rituals and teachings.
2. Spiritual people on the other hand prefer the term of GOD as a inner realization of GOD, oneness, self discovery, purity, and simple life, and GOD as a nature itself. Some may have rituals but in the eye of a religious people that could be outrageous.
3.Atheist- it doesn't mean they don't believe in GOD it's just that they don't agree with the term of GOD and all the rituals that a typical religion has. Because, for these people the all mighty exist but in their own ways. Where do you think Atheist find spiritual comfort when are in a need of it. They don't go to church or a temple. They have their own rituals to comfort them... it could be their work or hobbies or just a walk in a park... or a chat with friends. It doesn't mean they are sinful people or they don't have a place in heaven. Which is outrageous. For these people GOD exist in what they believe in. They believe in evolution, or BIg Bang or whatever.. but they are experiences a part of GOD. Because GOD is omnipresent, GOD is hope, GOD has no forms, GOD has no names, all these names are for our sake to make it simple for us, Atheist people are a part of a GOD because GOD made them too.

Dude, I'm Christian and I "buy the evolution stuff". As far as I'm concerned, some higher power created everything, and then let life on Earth run its course. He may have had a hand in creating it, but since then, he has left the planet mostly to itself, I believe. There's plenty of physical proof for evolution I won't deny.

And simply, religion is one of the leading causes of trouble, and because of that and its lack of evidence some find it troublesome and hard to believe. I don't even go to church because I have a lack of faith in humans - the interpreters of the "Bible", which no God wrote - MAN did.

But then, who are you to judge another? Love everyone and live as how you see is best, be it athiest or a child of God.

To follow something you have to believe it exists. I could take the easy route and just go along with the crowd, following something, but that wouldn't be fair to me or the people you are true believers. I don't want to cheapen your religion by pretending to believe in it. I do believe there is a higher power in this world ... I just don't believe it's the one you speak of. I hope this was honest, respectful, and an answer to your question. The last thing I want to do is offend anyone.

Who else? You that's who! You said it yourself...that it is 'simpler' to follow him and have everlasting life. You are speaking from fear and don't as yet realize that you are powerful and almighty enough to face and not fear the unknown without God.
