In the US, a special license is required to purchase a fully automatic weapon. Semiautomatics, however, are legal to own in most places.
You ask an excellent question. Our legislature has a great fear of mushrooms than of hand guns, apparently. Though I am a big fan and supporter of the 2nd amendment. Both should be legal.

This country has made some interesting moral choices in its time, and we all live out the consequences of those choices...
Long ago, it was deemed necessary for the public to be armed in order to prevent foriegn invasion. It was deemed so necessary that it became the 2nd amendment to the constitution. And, to this day, there is still wisdom in that logic.
As far as conservation goes, we also decided long ago it was important to protect certain species within our eco-system. There is a vast list of animals and plants that were deemed important enough to save. So, we all make an effort to save this particular set of species because its the law.
So, where these two moral stands meet, you get a place where you can buy an automatic weapon, but picking a Trillium flower is illegal. How to change this rather paradoxical situation? Change the law, and to change the law, you first need to change the consciousness of the community the law pertains to.
But, are you really gonna convince anyone that guns should be taken away from citizens during a time of war??? Or are you really gonna convince anyone that eliminating a species of plant from this environment is okay, as long as you get to put them on your dinner table before they're gone???
It may seem silly, but its this way for a reason. And, if the reason isn't valid anymore, then make a shift in consciousness, and lets get it corrected.

Gov't has little sense of an overall picture. Someone with enough power and $$$$ obviously thinks Trillium flowers are more important than human life. Go pick em anyway , run if you see the DNR , they grow on state land here in the MI.

It is already illegal, in most of the US, to purchase automatic weapons. (Though, there are ways around it, like converting a semi-automatic weapon, or getting a propper dealer or collector's liscence.)
It is legal to pick Trillium flowers in most of the US (only some of the northern states have such a law).
So, for the most part, things are as you believe they should be.

Because Trilliums are rare, automatic weapons are not. That's the answer. So, the question we should really ask is why are Trilliums rare and automatic weapons...not so much?
Sad. Good thought provoker.

It's just the way the world works. Besides, what good would it do you to pick a flower? It's like asking 'why can you swat flies but not kill an elephant?'

If we all gave up our guns, America would be open for invasion. It would be kind of hard to invade a country with millions of guns owned by the citizens. Because the citizens vastly outnumber the militants.

because there is a reason to have weapons as a right. If guns were illegal I will like to know what would you propose to defend yourself from a tyrannic government?
