Okay, is it a school policy or a law that says schools can't give medicines to the students without a doctor's note?

I have had to deal with cramps for the last three hours and I still can't get home for at LEAST another forty minutes. Do you think I could complain about this, or is this a law that I can't fight? And ladies, has anyone else ever had this happen to you?

Thanks for the replies so far. I normally do have some medicine on hand, so this time I don't and I can't call or anything because my parents are either busy or asleep because they work at night...so I'm mostly pissed that I forgot, and pissed that even though my parents wouldn't care and have said so I can't have anything...they asked me to lie down and I was like, WTF, you stupid office, it's cramps - they're WORSE when you sit still!!! I just walked out...

I don't see any reason they wouldn't be able to just give you a generic painkiller. When I was in high school, a lot of kids got aspirins from the school nurse for headaches and such. I could see why they wouldn't give you other types of medicine but painkiller? Your specific school may have some type of rule against it, but that sounds strange to me.

Maybe you could just keep a couple aspirins in your bag for future pains if nothing else.

I am not sure what your states' laws might be or your schools' policy, but our school's policy indicates that a student cannot carry 'drugs' of any kind on their person. The first couple of weeks of school students are advised to provide the school with any kind of medication they have to take and their doctor's statement along with the parents written approval. All of this is kept in a ziplock baggie and in the locked office cabinet. The school nurse can dispense that med to the student based upon the information and medication in the bag. We have students who have asthma and must have daily treatments Our nurse is on hand to assist the students with this. But for legal reasons, schools do not like to be responsible for 'giving out' medication to a student. I have students who ask me often for tylenol, etc But I cannot give it to them. I have no idea what they may be allergic to - even if they 'do' say - "I take it all the time". It is a policy that I would never ignore. I know all too well what kind of trouble the teacher and school can be faced with.

yes, it is against the law for school officials to give students any kind of medicine. A school nurse may be able to, but definitely not teachers or principles.

if it's that bad, you could bring some yourself with a note from your parents saying it's ok.

It is a law that the nurse (like me) cannot dispense a medication with out a doctors order, or note...What would happen if the nurse gave you Tylenol or even Motrin and you had a reaction to it and died...You mom would come back and say, "I didn't give you permission to give my MINOR child that medication", sue the school, nurse etc.....So to cover the backsides of everyone involved a doctor's note is necessary...Sorry....

If you have painful mesntrual perieds, you should aks your Doc to give a note. In addition, you can go to the nurse and ask for ibuprofen or tylenol, which she is allowed to give, that will help. But get note from your doc for the condition and the medicine to take in future.

Most schools need permission from the parents to give something as safe as aspirin because some people become addicted.

umm depending what school you go to most will let you take like Advil if they call your parents and get an ok from them. I have several medical conditions and I dont need dr. notes but simply just some paper work filled out by my parents.

That is usually how it goes! See if your mom can call or talk to the nurse and see if you can use meds for your cramps.
When i was in high school, i got such bad cramps ( i just wanted to die and COULD not move), that the nurse actually let me go home...
