I've had that before - total bu!!****. I asked why and was told that your credit history tells an employer a lot about you - if you don't take care of your $ then you won't take care of theirs. I told them to fvck off.

This is a GREAT question. I've asked and was told that if someone has really bad credit or tons of debt, it shows that there may be the potential for theft. But that's what a criminal check is for. Someone else mentioned that it measures your trustworthiness - which makes a little more sense. I think it's crap, because after my divorce, my credit score dropped to 550. It's back up now and I even have a mortgage, but it's creepy that I could have lost out on opportunities based that score. I shouldn't have to explain my personal life to a stranger; justify a number that's really none of their business.

That is just the conservative right wing way of dividing people into their bigoted class system. It's another way of the "haves" getting more and the "have-nots" getting even less.
Your credit history depends on a variety of circumstances, some of which you might have had control over and others you didn't. Until they can statistically link poor credit with poor job performance that should not be a factor in hiring a person over their job history, references, or education.

I agree...your credit score has nothing to do with being a good employee. By all means check with my last employer but stay away from my credit score.

well, if the job is a financial job then I wouldn't trust someone who couldn't keep their own finances in check.
Maybe it's a wake up call that they shouldn't get so many credit cards when they know they can't keep up with the bills.

The main reason for the credit check is to see how responsible the person is.

Yea, that doesn't seem fair....that sounds like discrimination!! I guess it doesn't matter if you speak English or not, so pretend to be a Mexican and I guarantee you'll get a job!! What's wrong with this country?
