It is all well and good saying Vista is right now rubbish (which it may well be, some have had good experiences, some bad) what about six months down the line when this guy is stuck with XP and has to then fork out and pay for Vista?

Go for Vista. The likely hood of issues is slim if you're buying from a good supplier, ie they check the system before they send it out to you.

However bare in mind some programs/applications do not yet have a Vista version out for it, so look over what you use, research it online, if you desperately need that program, you have to think through your options.

You can download vista or buy it on a DVD, either way you will need a copy on a dvd or an external hard drive to install it. If your computer is a generic type purchased from a main stream pc manufacturer then a vista upgrade will go fine, it seems only the high spec/unusual machines which are having driver issues.

Can you download Vista?

You can't install an operating system on your hard drive directly, it has to be done via a DVD in the case of Vista or a CD in the case of XP.

Neither - seriously Vista is NOT good right now and until the 2nd Edition comes out when they fix the many problems with it I'd stick with XP. Trust me, there are far too many glitches right now to get it, I would never move from XP unless they sort out the problems I have encountered when using it. I was going to get it myself until I saw just how bad it is.

Also - Vista EATS memory, you need at least 1GB of RAM to run Vista - you would need a new computer but I urge you not to right now, it truly is not worth it.

Go to Vista Upgrade Adviser and it will tell you all about compatibility issues you may have with your Windows XP

It is probably better to get a new computer with vista, because then you know that everything that comes with it will be compatible and you don't have to worry about finding and downloading drivers and having compatibility issues.

You cannot download Vista. You have to buy an upgrade DVD or CD.

Leave Vista alone. It is crap right now.
