The reason why the Roman Catholic Church was selling indulgences was because they had to raise money for a new St. Peter's the one we see today. They were able to sell these indulgences so quickly because they could have the basic form printed out and then just fill in the name. Of course this is what ticked Martin Luther off so badly, so he protested against the Church and started off on his effort to 'reform' the Church.

printing press = easy-to-produce books
easy-to-produce books = cheaper books
cheaper books = reading now a more affordable pasttime
affordable reading = more people become literate (middle classes)
increased literacy = increased access to new ideas, such as those that fueled the Reformation and the Scientific Revolution

It gave people a chance to read the bible for themselves and interpret it for themselves. The catholic church structure and the pope were not included in the bible which people finally saw when they read it further fueling the reformation.
