yes it's entirely safe, 1 in a million chance that something will happen.

This kind of incident is very rare. What you need to worry about is normal hazards like car accidents or robbery. If you are careful you will usually be safe.
Even in Virginia Tech, most of the people were not hurt. It is a campus of 35,000 people.
(Some of the other answers are trying to scare you, LOL.)

The chances of any terrorist activity occurring to you is SO LOW, you probably have a better chance of getting killed crossing your own street where you live now. The US is a huge country with many different kinds of people, just like the rest of the world. It's a great opportunity for you, and if you want to come here, do it! Perhaps they are just worried about their chick leaving the nest.

There are so many schools in the U.S. - this incident happened at ONE. For the most part, it is very safe. I personally would choose a school in a rural area (out in the country) as opposed to one in an urban setting.

Good luck! :)

Guess that's a personal decision, but living is dangerous - thankfully these nuts are on the news because such events aren't v common - don't let them stop you living your life! Guess you could consider another country like australia, nz, uk, canada etc. if your parents are extreemly concerned! Have a nice trip where ever you end up xx

I don't think it's safe at all. You better lock yourself up in your little room and think about what could have been if you went to school.
How could you ask a question like that. Whats the matter with you and who do you expect to answer this question with any degree of knowledge. Think about how many colleges and universities there are in the US. Now think about how long they all have been in business and also how many students are in each school. Get all of those facts together and then figue out the odds of getting shot when you are in school. Answer your own question with simple logic and be happy.

Of course - you can't be put off, despite this absolutely horrible tragedy. The last thing the US needs now is all the international students pulling out of university in fear - or indeed the domestic ones.

Of course it is. Things like that happen in every country once in a while. You have to take into account the size of the country and realise that it may happen more often in the US but there's a lot more people than the UK. We've had our fair share of lunatic gun killing sprees.

Before you begin a course in the US, a quick course on grammar might be in order to help you cope with the rigours of studying in English

No, if you go to America, you will get shot, out of the other 300 million people or so there.
