Name it after an important member of your own community-- past or present.
Personally, I like single-word names better b/c they're less aukward to write and say. (Example: "Smith Elementary" is better than "John Q. Smith Jr. Elementary.")
First, choose several members of the local community that people really respect. (Politicians, Philanthrapists, Volunteers, Sweet Old Ladies, Whatever) Perhaps there could even be a contest-- let people IN the community vote for their favorite. This way, people in town will feel a sense of ownership in the school.
Then, when a name is chosen, place a nice, descriptive plaque in the front entrance to the school. This will ensure the person is not forgotten.
If you name a school Abraham Lincoln Elementary or Martin Luther King Elementary, the school's name will not have a very siginificant and personal meaning to the people in the community. If you name it after a local hero, people will be talking about it for years to come.
"I helped choose the name of that school."
"I knew John Q. Smith personally."
"Your grandfather used to cut Mr. John Q. Smith's hair!"
"John Q. Smith lived in that bighouse down the street!"

Rather than name it after a person, and possibly hurt someone who didn't get picked (come on in the real world this always happens!), why don't you name it after one of these:
Name your school after a geographical landmark.
(The Ohio River School)
Name your school after an important local historical event.
(The Bunker Hill School)
Name your school with a guiding principle.
( the Excel School)
Just for your info...
The public school I work in is named after a river. The name gives the students a connection with their environment and a sense of ownership to land. Not a bad thing!
