There are cells in the skin called Melanocytes. These produce a pigment called melanin that is brown/black in color. Everyone has the same number of melanocytes, but their location and distribution in people can vary. These cells produce more pigment in darker people. This would also be the reason some people have freckles (distribution). Melanin helps absorb UV rays to protect the skin. So if you "tan", you will increase your production of melanin, and get darker.

Listen, Some say it's due to race, but it's due to a pigment which provides colour to your skin which is widely known as melanin. It's also present in your hair. To know how much melanin is in ur skin, see how dark is your skin. Negros have the most melanin of all whereas the americans have the least amount of melanin as they are too fair.

Human skin color can range from very dark to nearly colorless (appearing pinkish white due to the blood in the skin) in different people. Skin tone is determined by the amount and type of the pigment melanin in the skin. On average, women have slightly lighter skin than men.

In general, people with ancestors from sunny regions have darker skin than people with ancestors from regions with less sunlight. However, this is complicated by the fact that there are people with ancestors from both sunny and less sunny regions, and whose skin coloring may have any shade of the spectrum of possible tones. Sexual selection also plays a role.

The color of the skin depends mostly on the amount of melanin . Melanin is made by a certain kind of cell in the skin.
Everyone has about the same number of these cells, but the cells in dark- skinned people make more melanin than those of light skinned people.

We all have the same genetic Code, We through environmental selection, have different dominant genes. As to variations of skin color, People with darker skins were better adapted to intense sunlight and people with lighter skin color were better suited for areas of less sun. Darker skin color can absorb enough vitamin c, due to the intense sunlight, and in areas of lesser light lighter skin is need to absorb vitamin C efficiently. In modern times due to the varied diets of people and the use of shelter in the tropics, there is little environmental advantage to skin color.
