Home-Depot and Lowe's have a few variety's of flowering cherry trees right now. They usually carry a white weeping cherry, a taller pink weeping cherry, Kwanzan cherry, Shogetsu, and Yoshino cherry. While it is a good idea to plant trees in the fall, these trees are potted so they will be totally fine to plant now. They have already broken dormancy and would be better off in the ground than in that little pot. If the tree was bare root and not a potted tree, then you would have to wait until late fall or early spring. Enjoy your tree!!!! :)

Beautiful tree. Some come with the Japanese effect and others more upright and majestic in nature. The blossom effect is more than outstanding. This tree can and should be the centerpiece of a landscape.
DO NOT PURCHASE OR PLANT this tree at this time! Flowering trees should be planted in the mid-fall. Spend your time preparing the site with the proper soils, additives, and plans to highlight the tree. In Mid-september go to a local Nursery and purchase a tree of a minimum of 1" caliber (roughly 30-100 dollars) of the variety you want. The variety will determine the price.
You are purchasing a tree not the blooms. If you want color use annual plants. These trees need alot of attention! They can be a source of major pruning, insects, pests, and fungi. All of this for a two week period of wonder. Remember that the tree is year long and not the two weeks.
The tree can be planted in full-bud where you want. It will need full sun and attention that is the same as a new puppy.
You will need to feed it, water it, stake it, and keep weeds away from it. Those bright blooms of spring will become a chore that includes sprays of pesticides and the like throughout the remaing seasons.
A specimen Cherry Tree is costly and worth the cost provided it is supported by a cast of plantings that highlight the tree. All flowering trees and Evergreens are the same.
Have a plan, have the support for the plants in place, then go when the time is right. Right now is not the time to plant a Flowering Tree, do it in the Fall.

I would highly recommend your local independent garden center or nursery. You'll be able to see the plants in person and usually you'll be getting a better size/ shape plant than at the 'box' store.
Spring is an excellent time to plant container grown trees, as well as those in balled-and-burlaped root balls. Fall can be a better time to plant, but generally the selection of plants decrease late in the season. Also flowering trees and shrubs are usually brought into the nurseries at their showiest times.
If you haven't got a local place to shop for the tree, a catalogue might be your only choice. I generally discourage them, you don't get to see the plant. The plant is also, generally smaller (to allow shipping) than one you can get locally, though the price might be the same, or more! Take a look at www.forestfarm.com It's a catalogue company I've used before, and have been pleased with.
I hope that this helps
Good luck

I would imagine your local home and garden store will carry them. Now is the time to plant.
