The defense department was using up 21% of the entire GNP, and it caused an economic collapse. The central control wasn't run very efficiently, and the entire economy was unable to keep up the pace of the requirements.

This prove communist, marxist or whatever lenist dont work in creating a equal and fair human society.
Human nature of selfishness and the extreme equality of division of property resulted in each people under the communist rule to become lazy since all receive the same equal result, no matter how much effort one put in it. Therefore, this caused people not to work hard but waiting to benefit from those who work harder.
When Lenin was in power in the early USSR, he realised this problem in communist system and allowed certain property to be owned by private individual and open certain market to the western european countries and US, he tried to create a society with communist system as majority and balanced it with the good of the capitalist, a system which China is currenlty practising. The country may have flourished under this system, if Lenin lived long enough.
Unfortunately, Lenin died early and Stalin came to power, he revoked Lenin's policy and imposed a totalitarian commnunist ruling, the same as today North Korea, which only benefit the ruling party and impoverished the common people. The ruling party impose policy based on their own interest that resulted in corruption and coupled with the inherent problem of the communist system, this resulted in the collapse of economy and starvation to the people.
Stalin's rule had became the set model of ruling for the USSR until it collapse in 1991. Despite the efforts of several sucessors to Stalin in trying to reform the USSR, all were in vain because of harming the interest of the ruling party.
The cold war and arm races with US created far more burdens on the fragile economy of USSR.
Eventually, all these resulted in the inevitable collapse of the USSR in 1991.

Communism although sounding good in principal to some by eliminating religion and making everyone equal in society.. ended becoming an atheistic, terrorist society with everyone being equally impoverished. During the 60 plus year reign it did nothing but try to break men's spirit making them desperate enough to climb over a wall/slip under barriers/swim raging rivers or be shot rather than go back behind the Iron Curtain.

The USSR collapsed under the weight of it's own corrupt, incompetent government, and the destroyed economy that resulted from that government.

Basically communism is corrupt and the Government gives out economic incentives, but the fact is the Government is more likely to be corrupt if they control everything.

Stalin for instance killed 22 million capitalist while he was in power.

Also if you are a Government employee you family gets greater care than other citizens.

I remember lines of Russians lining up at stores to buy goods but there were no goods to buy. It was all to sad.
