If you are trying to get pregnant, about one month before you plan on trying. Otherwise, as soon as you find out that you are pregnant. The cruicial point for folic acid is within the first 5 weeks as the neural tube closes. However, because most women are more than 5 weeks before they even know they are pregnant, all pastas and grain products are fortified with folic acid. Take a word of advice; buy over the counter stool softeners or drink a glass a prune/grape juice every day. The iron will bind you up like crazy. As someone who developed hemorrhoids during pregnancy I highly recommend anything that will help you go to the bathroom.

If you are pregnant, you should start taking them today (and preferably a prescription vitamin, as many of the OTCs have large amounts of synthetic Vitamin A, which has been shown to cause birth defects). If you're not pregnant yet, go ahead and start taking them---you should be taking them when you are trying to conceive anyway.

ASAP!!! The folic acid is a big one so make sure you're getting plenty of it... After 3 months the folic acid won't help anymore since you will be too far along so if you're passed that then don't worry about it... I was sick for the first 3 1/2 months and couldn't take any vitamins and keep them down and my baby is very healthy the doc. says... So its all in how you eat, and exercise, and whatnot....

I think the best time to take prenatal vitamins is about 6 weeks before conception. but who actually knows when conception starts, right? I think the best thing to do is just to start taking them when you are going to try to get pregnant. after all, its just a multi-vitamin. it won't hurt if you start too early. better early than late. Good luck!

When you are trying to conceive is best, it gives the vitamins a chance to build up in your system. If you're already pregnant, start right away.

Prenatal vitamins will not hurt you at all, you can take them anytime, even when you're not pregnant or trying to get pregnant. They are good for you! Start right now!

My doctor recommend that I start taking prenatal vitamins and Folic acid two to three months prior to trying to conceive. Talk to your doctor and figure out what is right for you.

You should start taking them as soon as you know you might be planning to conceive.
Here is an article which will explain the importance of nutrition in early pregnancy, and even before you conceive!
