Of course they should, after a given period of time. WE are the government, and no government on Earth should operate without visibility.

Should we know what is going on or have access to documents on a day to day basis? No. Nothing would ever get done! We pay our politicians to operate in our best interest.

Should the government provide you access with documents? Sure, but you should have to go get them yourself. I don't want to fund a library and records service for day to day correspondence.

It would be really nice if our President at least obeyed these laws. However, he decided for example NOT to release the papers related to his father's presidency, even though by law they must now be released.

In general, the freedom of information act has become a joke; the Bush administration so heavily redacts documents obtained under the act as to render them useless (which is presumably the point).

Yes, we need freedom of information for sound governance; but no, we cannot have access to everything that is currently being worked on by the administration or our security organizations - that would lead to major threats against our country.

What we need is a revised set of legislation and an ombudsman that can ensure documents are not inappriately redacted or edited when they are released.

All public records should eventually be declassified. If we are really a free and open society there is no legitimate reason to keep the documents of our elected government secret.

Of course, matters of national security should remain classified until it is determined that it is safe to release them.

Eventually, yes; it is necessary so we can learn from the past and try to stop repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

Did you know that this admin. is trying to re classify stuff that is already out there? Not sure how they plan to pull that one off!!

they do. it's just a matter of timing. ultimately every document will be de-classified. The timing is based upon whether it can be used to further the admin. agenda or if it could harm their agenda.

If you mean declassify EVERYTHING then the answer is absolutely NOT!
